I'm happy today to kick off a two-part interview with Greg Hayes, Raxco Software's Manager of Technical Solutions and 5-time Microsoft MVP for file systems. Greg has been in the IT field for 20 years and works closely with many of the world's largest companies in helping them with their fragmentation problems and file system issues.
For example, when the folks at CNN ran into a severe fragmentation and file system problem because the third-party defragmenter it was using was unable to handle the level of activity at the company, Greg was called in along with engineers from CNN, HP and Microsoft to diagnose the problem. The fact that PerfectDisk ultimately was brought in to address the problem is a nice story for us, but it also illustrates the level of expertise required at times to pinpoint specific problems. This is the type of contact Greg makes regularly as he assists enterprise and othe business users.
In Part 1 of this interview, Greg addresses the general question of whether or not defragmentation really matters, built-in and freeware defraggers, and the issue of defragmentation in various environments - servers, desktops, laptops, Windows Home Server, etc. The podcast is less than 8 minutes long, so why not grab a cup of coffee and hear what Greg has to say. Whether you agree or disagree with Greg's views, it will definitely give you something to think about.
