We are occasionally asked why PerfectDisk does not display media connected by a USB or Firewire connection. By default, PerfectDisk 8.0 does not display this media. Even though these devices represent themselves to Windows as being a fixed hard drive, they may not support defragmentation, so we take the cautious route.
If you do want to defragment these devices, you should first verify that the USB/Firewire drive is on the Windows hardware compatibility list. Then check with the USB/firewire device manufacturer and verify that defragmentation is supported on these devices. In addition, Microsoft recommends that you disable Write Caching on removable drives.
If the USB/Firewire device DOES support defragmentation, then you can enable USB support in PerfectDisk by going to tools, advanced configuration, removable storage, select the option to allow defragmenting USB and firewire devices and click ok. The USB drive should display once this option is enabled.
