Some of you may remember the "new" Coke that was introduced to the masses in the 1980s, with great fanfare. It was to be the end of Coke that everyone knew, the dawn of a new era, a breakthrough in taste, etc. It turned out to be all hype and no substance, which is why, when you go to the store now looking for Coke, you get "Classic" Coke.
You may be now hearing of the end of scheduling and the dawn of a new era in defragmentation. You may be reading that somehow there is monitoring of a system's resource usage with the monitoring itself causing zero system impact! You may be reading that you can have your cake and....wait! No, I've heard that one before.
Look, if you read that "scheduling defragmentation worsens performance by delaying the improvement that defragmentation brings," hopefully it was written years ago. PerfectDisk's unique Space Restoration Technology consolidates free space in a single pass and gives you the largest possible block of free space. This allows the file system to create new files contiguously - slowing down the rate that the drive refragments. If a defragger does not consolidate free space effectively, then the drive refragments quickly - requiring continual defragmentation in order to stay ahead of the fragmentation issue that is caused by lack of free space consolidation! And if a defragger needs to monitor continually to check on all that, resource consumption goes up. It can also spend a lot of time "waiting for idle resources," while still consuming 10-15% idle resources.
This is why we are receiving more inquiries than ever before for PerfectDisk, and lots of interest in our Space Restoration Technology and AutoPilot Scheduling. It's part of the reason that more Microsoft MVPs and MCTs run PerfectDisk. It's why Gartner says single-pass defragmentation is much preferred over multi-pass defragmentation.
I suppose if I wanted to change the oil in my car at the end of every day I could do that. But I prefer regular, preventative maintenance to keep my car in top shape. Same goes for my drives.
And I'll enjoy my Classic Coke too....
